Road Compaction Measurement During Road Construction

Road Compaction Measurement During Road Construction

A remote Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) sensor (using guided wave microwave), capable of providing road moisture level measurement and compaction measurement for road construction.

Envisaged uses include:

  • Management of water application from water carts during road construction is a key aspect of optimizing road compaction, as too little water applied will result in less compaction from insufficient lubrication of aggregates and too much water applied will result in particles ‘floating up’.
  • Real time assessment of road compaction from a compactor enables feedback to a human operator or autonomous vehicle. Current approaches use vibratory responses and can be prone to inaccuracies.
